Shamgiri-Parasmania Reserve Forest

The pressure of tourist numbers and the restrictions involved tends to limit the authenticity of the experience in our national parks. What makes the Shamgiri-Parasmania Reserve Forest in Madhya Pradesh (not far from Panna NP) so appealing then is that, not being inside a national park, it is a wilderness unspoilt. Neither does the embargo on walking-enforced in most parks-apply here. The hilly terrain, which includes the dramatic Pahad plateau, yields thickly vegetated gorges, numerous streams and sprawling forests of palash and teak. It supports a diverse fauna, including the sloth bear, wild dog, hyena, wolf, Asian wildcat, leopard and boar. To foot it through this rich habitat, but minus the dreariness of figuring it all out by yourself, simply leave matters in the able hands of Shyamendra Singh, Ken River Lodge. Singh offers walks in the reserve forest, accompanied by trained naturalists, as part of a camping-out package which also takes in a night safari. True to the spirit of camping, the
accommodation is basic, in simple shikar tents with cots, and there is no electricity at the campsites. You can choose a route suggested by your team naturalist or chart one on your own. And there's nothing better than a hot, fresh meal at the end of a day spent walking the wilds.
